IL “Weary Herakles” (Herakles Farnese type) stands as a monumental symbol of Türkiye’s successful diplomatic and cultural property repatriation efforts. After being separated for 31 years, the upper half of the statue was returned from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 2011 to be reunited with its lower half at the Antalya Museum. This study documents the high-precision restoration process led by Melih Ekinci, with significant contributions from Uğur Genç in the documentation and structural synthesis of the technical narrative. Ali Osman Avşar, throughout the project, served as a senior advisor, providing his extensive technical expertise and guidance to ensure the structural integrity and aesthetic success of the restoration.
Technical Highlights of the Restoration: De-restoration of Previous Interventions: The first stage involved the delicate removal of an old epoxy base and brass dowels previously installed in the United States. This required careful mechanical intervention to ensure the original marble surfaces remained unharmed.
Precision Realignment: To achieve a perfect structural fit, the team conducted multiple “dry fits” (provas). A previous misalignment of the right arm was identified and corrected using specialized mechanical cleaning and re-adhesion techniques.
Advanced Structural Support: The two main fragments were joined using high-strength fiberglass rods (20mm diameter). To protect the artifact from vibration, the drilling process was performed incrementally (from 5mm to 20mm) under strict control.
Reversible Conservation: In line with modern conservation ethics, a 3% Paraloid B-72 barrier layer was applied to the joining surfaces. This ensures that all adhesive materials are fully reversible, allowing for future interventions without damaging the original stone.
Significato: The restoration, completed through the collaborative efforts of the Istanbul and Antalya Museum teams, allowed the statue to be presented as a single, unified masterpiece for the first time since its discovery. This project exemplifies the technical expertise and multidisciplinary approach of Turkish conservators in managing high-profile archaeological repatriations.
