Museological Studies and Conservation of the Golden Horn Chains

Astratto:
This research outlines the multi-faceted conservation and museological project conducted on the historical iron chains of the Golden Horn. Beyond traditional physical restoration, this study introduces a holistic management model for artifacts that have been dispersed across various institutional collections over centuries.
Key Components of the Project
Holistic Museology: A pioneering display method was implemented, utilizing integrated information panels across four major institutions—the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, Rumeli Hisarı Museum, Military Museum, and Istanbul Naval Museum. This approach allows visitors to perceive the fragmented chain as a unified historical object.
Scientific Conservation: The project details the mechanical and chemical cleaning of the links, including salt removal and the application of specialized protective coatings (Paraloid B-72) to prevent further oxidation.
Advanced Documentation: For the first time, laser scanning technology was employed to create high-precision 3D models of the chain links, providing a digital archive for future research.
Public Engagement via Replicas: To enhance educational outreach, a specialized molding and casting process (using RTV-2 silicone and plaster) was used to create authentic replicas. These replicas, displayed at the Panorama 1453 History Museum, serve to bridge the gap between different museum locations and stimulate public interest in the original artifacts.
Significato: By treating the chain not just as a metal object but as a symbol of Istanbul’s identity, this study demonstrates howSemantic Restorationcan be achieved through a combination of laboratory science, 3D technology, and collaborative museology.
