
Dr. Uğur Genç
ABOUT
In 1999, he enrolled in the Business Administration program at Uludağ University. In 2004, he graduated from the Business Administration program at Anadolu University. During this time, he worked at various companies. In 2003, he began studying at Istanbul University’s Department of Conservation and Restoration of Movable Cultural Properties. In 2006, he received a 2-star CMAS diver certification.
During his restoration and conservation education, he completed internships in various archaeological excavations and museums, specializing in the conservation and archaeometry of metal artifacts. In 2007, he started his master’s degree in Turkish Art at Marmara University, Institute of Turkic Studies. For three years, he volunteered as an educator in the Culture Ants Project of the Foundation for the Development of Cultural Awareness. During the 2008 and 2009 excavation seasons, he worked as the Chief of the Restoration and Conservation Laboratory in Denizli. In September 2009, he completed his thesis titled The Problem of the Golden Horn Chain after researching the chains used during the Conquest of Constantinople. In 2010, he published his first book, The Golden Horn Chain. The same year, he was appointed to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and began working at the Istanbul Restoration and Conservation Center Laboratory. In addition to his work in metal artifact conservation, he contributed to the formation of interdisciplinary collaborations and the organization of various workshops.
He has participated in numerous national and international scientific events, specializing in the conservation of metal artifacts and their examination through archaeometric techniques. Since November 2017, he has been working at the Ankara Regional Restoration and Conservation Laboratory. He has been involved in many conservation and restoration projects annually within the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, including TÜBİTAK projects. As a guest lecturer, he taught courses on metal knowledge and conservation at Ankara University’s Department of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Properties. He provided scientific consultancy for documentaries on The Golden Horn Chain prepared by TRT Documentary and Iz Tv.
In May 2020, his book Evaluation Report and Reflections on the Restoration and Conservation of Tangible Cultural Heritage in Turkey was published. In 2023, he completed his PhD research titled Development of Methodologies for Authenticity Investigations of Movable Cultural Properties in Restoration and Conservation Laboratories under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ali Akın Akyol at Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University’s PhD program in the Conservation of Cultural Heritage. He is a member of ICOM-CC (Committee for Conservation), the Cultural Research Association, Friends of Cultural Heritage (FOCUH). He is a founding member the Conservator-Restorers Association. He has experience as a committee member evaluating EU projects and continues to coordinate three projects accepted under the EU Civil Society Program. Every year, he participates in various seminars, talks, panels, exhibitions, and conferences, sharing his knowledge, ideas, and experiences through presentations and publications.
Dr Genç is married and has one child. And he has been living in Dubai since October 2024.
