From Isolated Craft to Collective Consciousness: Unveiling the Final Image of Heritage
Traditional museology suffers from a structural paradox: it freezes artifacts inside historical timelines while deliberately erasing the modern biography of their physical stabilization and restoration from the visitor’s gaze. This pioneering open-access e-book, rooted in my multi-museum doctoral investigations, deconstructs this traditional isolation. It asserts that Conservation-Restoration is not merely a supportive technical backend, but a dynamic Epistemic Medium capable of fostering public awareness, social justice, and deep institutional trust.
The volume evaluates a series of world-first interactive experiments across major national museums (including the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and Ankara Painting and Sculpture Museum). Through curated public setups like ‘Be a Part of It’ (Bi Parçası Ol) and augmented reality simulations (Yansımalar), the research invites the public to step beyond glass vitrines. Visitors actively participate in final-stage stabilizations, witness hidden internal damages via localized UV fluorescence tracking (Kusursuzluk Gözlerinde), and engage in the ethical dilemmas of restoration decision-making. This book serves as a global methodological manual, proving that an artifact’s final image is an actively constructed narrative where the conservator serves as the primary diplomatic link between society and material truth.
Key Highlights & Impact:
The 82% Communication Void: Directly addressing the longitudinal data indicating that 82% of society misunderstands or feels completely detached from conservation workflows, converting this crisis into proactive public outreach.
The “Multiverse” Decision Framework: Implementing the ‘Multiverse’ (Çoklu Evren) educational protocol, showcasing 10 identical ceramic variants treated under differing ethical choices (from non-intervention to intrusive over-painting) to harvest direct visitor ethical consensus data.
Bypassing Ageing Reversal Distortion: Openly challenging the ‘hyper-restoration’ trend that artificially rejuvenates ancient artifacts at the cost of erasing their documentary ‘wear-and-tear’ signs, defending the preservation of time-leached patinas.
Bridging Conservation with Conceptual Art: Transforming the restoration bench into a site for visual art creation, framing ready-made historical fragments and stabilizing paper-tapes as valid conceptual exhibits.
Multi-Institutional Coordination: Successfully orchestrating a massive public education network by uniting the General Directorate of Cultural Assets, four national museums, regional restoration laboratories, and university research hubs under a single social mission.
An artifact’s final image is the ultimate masterpiece of the Conservator-Restorer. We do not just repair the clay; we curate how society negotiates with time.
Special Acknowledgements
This interactive revolution was made possible through the visionary collaboration of the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations Directorate (Yusuf Kıraç, Umut Alagöz, Mine Çifçi), the Ankara Painting and Sculpture Museum (Murat Yıldırım), the Samsun Archaeology Museum (Kenan Sürül, Orhan Alper Şirin), and the Ankara Ethnography Museum (Ali Haydar Atalay). Special gratitude to the Ankara Regional Conservation Laboratory and Berna Çağlar Eryurt of the Association of Conservator-Restorers for their institutional synergy.
